Near a harbor on the eastern side of Borgarfjörður, across from Bakkagerði, lives a large puffin colony. Locals in a town along our route recommended that we make a point of visiting, as the nesting season had begun only days earlier. At Hafnarhólmi, the islet where they nest, we found hundreds of puffins flying around, socializing, observing us with the same curiosity we had for them, and disappearing into hideaways in the grassy rock like hobbits in their holes.
